Questions about Revelation sermon series

It was stated in the sermon notes that Christ was coming 1st for His people (the church) then He will come back w/His people. When does He come for the believers who have died in Christ? Where are the ones who are asleep in Christ waiting for Him?
The thief one the cross was told he would be with Jesus in Paradise. Is this the same paradise the Islamic Muslims are talking about.
What are the dead in Christ doing until He comes for them?
After doing some re-reading and checking my confusion comes in the notes III. A. First, He comes for His people(the church)but when in fact 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 (NASB) For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with a trumpet of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first. vs. 17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and thus we shall always be with the Lord.
Not much of a difference but enough to have people who loves ones have died in Christ asking the question as to what happens to these love ones.
