Tim’s Takeaways from the Multi-Site Conference

By Paul | March 11, 2008

multisite.jpgDave Dawson and I (Tim Phillips) attended the Multi-Site Practicum held at Community Christian Church in Naperville, IL. The practicum is designed to assist churches in developing a step-by-step strategy in becoming a multi-site ministry.

One important highlight from the practicum was an emphasis on the role of Small Groups at a satellite campus.
A.    Small Groups establish a reproductive culture. As a small group leader trains a new leader through apprenticeship, additional groups are formed to involve new people coming into the church.

B.    People are best cared for in small groups. This creates a loyalty to their small group that will keep them at a new campus – this is where their friends are.

D.    Proximity increases the depth of community. Since people are closer together, it increases their connection to the campus, commitment and ownership and they are more likely to bring friends.

Lastly, Paul asked for me to share any cool resource, experience or story about a person we met.  Dave and I discovered that a person walking on the sidewalk in downtown Chicago is a much better resource than a road map when circling downtown for 45 minutes trying to find the freeway.
