A Teachable Staff

By Paul | November 2, 2007

person-reading-a-book.jpgSeveral of the staff were asked what they were reading or listening to lately that God was using to help them pursue Jesus and His loved ones more deeply. Here’s a spattering of responses, both to encourage you and also to give you some ideas for good material:

Cultivating a Life for God (by Neil Cole) – this is my second time reading through Neil’s book, and it is refreshing my understanding of the Kingdom, my role as a minister, and my role as a Jesus-follower. (John Stone)

I’m studying the Beatitudes and doing 1-to-1 Discipleship with someone. This reminds me that I need to be obedient in ALL areas of my life. My eating has been on-again, off-again for way too many years. It seems that everywhere I turn, in my daily Bible reading or in-depth study of the Beatitudes, or reading of my daily devotionals that I have sent to me, it is all about “OBEDIENCE.” That means dying to self!!! Die is right in the middle of the word–how good of God to do that. (Joanne Lueck)

I have been reading The Cross of Christ by John Stott. I admit that at times I have trouble following Him, but overall I am deeply moved by understanding a little more why Jesus, the Son of God, died for us. (Dave Dawson)

Relational Christianity by Steve Meeks is a book I have gone back to recently and will draw from for my Jan Term class. It has helped me focus on “being with Jesus” rather than “doing Christianity.” (Dave Hilliard)

This is a particular scripture passage that has been meaningful to me as I seek to experience the love of Christ personally. It also has served as a prayer template for Resonate small group leaders.
Eph 3:16-21 “I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God.
Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.
(Kelli Templeton)

25 Ways to Win with People by John Maxwell/Les Parrott gives me reminders on the little (and big) things I can do to truly make people feel valued as God’s children, and to build them up in Christ as Jesus would. It’s so practical! (Paul Casey)

I get a daily thought from Greg Laurie. Today’s devo reminded me of Joseph’s sermon two weeks ago about the coat/shawl. What am I doing (putting on) to slow me down? (Lorna Foelber)

My small group is going through John Piper’s “Future Grace” – it’s been amazing (grace!) how God has used that book in conjunction with the sermons these last three weeks. Piper looks at what faith in future grace is and how it helps us overcome our struggle with sin. At times the book is deep and deals with some weighty issues. But he also gets practical and deals with specific issues including anxiety, pride, lust, and anger. (Dave Stone)
