DRAWING OUT Group Members in Discussion

D raft a plan, using questions to draw people from the general to the specific

R each for both information and opinions. “What does the passage say?” “What do you think about that?”

A void questions that produce yes or no responses.

W ait. Don’t rush in to answer. Give participants time to answer.

I nspire and encourage. Ask questions first of the group, then of the individual. Create an environment where success is easy.

N ame. Call members by name when asking questions.

G ive verbal hugs; affirm people. Model positive behavior and affirmation.

O ne thought at a time. Don’t ask overly general questions, nor more than one question at a time.

U se a variety of questions. Three types of questions are knowledge, understanding, and application: What does it say? What does it mean? How does it apply to you?

T ransition. Relate information from lesson to lesson. Do not expect people to make giant steps. Build a bridge for understanding.
