A Heart for Bethel Newcomers

By Paul | April 3, 2007

mary-spanner.jpgIf you know Mary Spanner, you know what enthusiasm and warmth she has for loving people–especially those coming to Bethel for the first time.  Learn a little more about Mary’s special role at the church and what you can do as a leader to assist the process of assimilation.
1.      How long have you been assimilating newcomers to Bethel, and how did you get into it in the first place?

I have been assimilating Newcomers I think for about 10 years. I started making phone calls first as a volunteer in 1996.  I was hired in September of 1998. Guess they liked me!

2.      What brings you the greatest joy in your particular ministry?

The privilege that I have been given to experience reaching out and loving people and to see and hear the Holy Spirit working in them is very humbling. The greatest joy is that God has given me a special gift and that I can use it here with the Newcomers to Bethel.

3.      What ways (tasks/avenues) do you attempt to connect those new around here?

First, by meeting new people in the café on Sundays. Then through making phone calls. Newcomer Orientation. Connecting people to others in various small groups in the church.

4.      How can leaders assist you formally or informally in this vital ministry?

Volunteering in the Espresso Café on Sunday mornings to meet the Newcomers–not every Sunday, of course, but once or twice a month after 1 service.
Also, just being aware of those around them that they don’t know and introducing themselves. Newcomers are so easy to detect: Deer-in-the-headlights look; body language, too. Not fearing that they, the newcomer, has been around for a while. It’s Okay, they’re new to you!

5.      Just for fun, if you were a vehicle, which one would you be and why?

Jeep Wrangler.  (4 wheel drive) Love the challenge of the steep climb or making it through the rough terrain and then declaring victory. Yes!!!
